The esplanade of the Mosques in Jerusalem became the scene of violent clashes yesterday between Israeli police and Palestinians.

A situation denounced by Morocco.

The kingdom "expresses its strong condemnation and strong denunciation of the incursion of the Israeli occupation forces into the al-Aqsa mosque, the closing of its doors and the aggression of the unarmed worshipers in the mosque compound and on its esplanades,” the Moroccan foreign ministry said in a statement.

“Blatant aggression and methodical provocation”

More than 150 Palestinians were injured Friday during these clashes, raising fears of a conflagration in the Palestinian Territories.

Rabat "considers that this blatant aggression and this methodical provocation during the holy month of Ramadan will only fuel feelings of hatred and extremism and destroy the chances of relaunching the peace process in the region", is it added.

King Mohammed VI -- chairman of the Al-Quds committee, responsible for helping to safeguard Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem -- ordered that this "condemnation" be communicated "directly to the head of the Israeli liaison office in Rabat", specified the Ministry.

Rabat also called on the UN and the international community "to intervene urgently to put an end to these violations and attacks against the Palestinian people".
