On this occasion, the program
La marche du monde
was reporting from Cherbourg in the footsteps of those who boarded the
Titanic
on April 10, 1912 , because it is here that La cité de la mer inaugurated its new space devoted to the
Titanic
and its last stopover in the port of Cherbourg.
This new exhibition space is staged in the former transatlantic ferry terminal, a station considered to be one of the finest examples of art deco architecture in Europe.
It was here, via Cherbourg, that millions of Europeans transited at the beginning of the 20th century because, for them, boarding the
Titanic
meant trying their luck in America.
A dream stopped short by the sinking of a liner, however renowned for its safety.
With
La marche du monde
, Valérie Nivelon takes you on board the
Titanic
, not with first class passengers, but with third class passengers, with the little people of European migrants who dream of America.
This show originally aired on May 12, 2012.
Pierre Valdy
, head of the Ifremer exploration mission on the
Titanic,
was the guest of the program
Allô ici RFI
, August 3, 2000. At the microphone of Jean-François Cadet, Pierre Valdy talks about the objects brought up since the
Titanic
.
