Yesterday, the local authorities and the fire department in Brazil announced that 14 people were killed due to heavy rains, which in turn caused mudslides.

Reuters reported that at least 14 people died, including six from the same family, in the southern Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.

Paraty Mayor Luciano Vidal said: "We were expecting rain and we issued alerts, but unfortunately this house collapsed in the neighborhood of Ponta Negra, only one child was saved."

"We have more than 70 homeless families, we provide shelters and rent hostels for these people," the mayor of Paraty added.

Rio de Janeiro has witnessed bad weather over the past few weeks, during which landslides and floods have killed about 240 people in about one month in the northern Petropolis region.
