A fire broke out this Tuesday evening, around 10:30 p.m., in the stairwell of a 17-storey building in Sarcelles (Val-d'Oise).

140 residents were evacuated, among them 32 people, including three children, had to be hospitalized, reports

.

The fire would have started from rubbish and furniture piled up on several levels of the tower.

It would then have spread over several floors and the smoke would have invaded the common areas up to the top floor.

In all, 91 firefighters were mobilized for almost six hours.

Fight against the sleep merchants

The mayor (PS) Patrick Haddad pointed the finger at the sleep merchants who would own several apartments in this building where they would pile up dozens of people.

He also denounced the lack of maintenance linked to the difficulties of the condominium.

“You have to bang your fist on the table!

he said, recalling the need to strengthen legal proceedings against slum dealers.

An investigation has been opened to determine the exact causes of the fire.
