Dr. Youssef Al-Sharif: “Some social media users commit acts that expose them to legal accountability.”

The legal advisor, Dr. Youssef Al-Sharif, warned social media users of the penalty for defaming defendants in cases that are still under investigation or deliberating in the courts, by publishing their names and exposing them, and directing offensive comments to them, pointing out that the cybercrime and rumor law tightened the penalty on the perpetrators of these Acts of imprisonment and a fine.

He gave an example of this by publishing a news in an official medium about the arrest of a person responsible in a case of bribery, and although the news did not indicate the name of this person, or the entity in which he works, someone may come and republish this news, revealing through a comment or addition , for the name of the accused referred to in the news, or refers to him as the official in a business, and his information is correct, which leads to defamation and harm to the person.

Al-Sharif stressed that individuals do not have the right to disclose this information even if it is true, because it has its privacy in a way that serves the public interest, or because the concerned authorities do not want to publish the name or the party, and the fact that no judgment has also been issued convicting him so far, and this extends to the fact that one of them photographed The accused is in the place of the investigations, and he publishes, for example, the photo, although it is real, but it is a crime whose perpetrator is held accountable for its action, so it is necessary to pay attention to these behaviors, and we do not make them easy.
