Zaki Hannache was taken into custody by an investigating judge from an Algiers court, a week after being arrested at his home, which was searched.

His mobile phone was confiscated, according to the National Committee for the Liberation of Detainees, which indicates that the young man is being prosecuted in particular for "apology for terrorist acts", "undermining national integrity and unity" and "

spreading fake news

".

Zaki Hannache, very active on social networks, is known for his commitment to prisoners of conscience in Algeria.

Ahmed Benchemsi, Human Rights Watch's communications director for North Africa and the Middle East, explains that he was monitoring arrests and trials, and was therefore a very important source.

For him, his arrest “

demonstrates the will of the authorities to prevent the Hirak arrests from being documented, and that the world knows what is happening

 ”.

His detention comes two days after the third anniversary of the protest movement, on February 22, when several human rights organizations again warned of the ongoing repression in Algeria.

Human rights organizations estimate that the country currently has 300 prisoners of conscience.
