Ecuadorian police broke down the outer door of the Mexican diplomatic headquarters and entered the main courtyard. Former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas sought refuge in the Mexican embassy in Quito last December after an arrest warrant was issued against him on corruption charges.

The arrest warrant against him relates to allegations that he diverted funds intended for reconstruction after a devastating earthquake in 2015. Glas was only released from prison in November, where he was serving time in a wide-ranging scandal involving Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.
