"In view of the events, developments and aggravations of recent days, FC Schalke 04 has decided to remove the word + Gazprom + from its shirts," the club said in a statement on Thursday.

For the next match on Saturday in Karlsruhe, the shirts will be flocked with the simple name "Schalke 04".

Schalke is a historic club in the Ruhr area, several times national champion in the 20th century, but currently struggling to try to move up to the first division.

Earlier Thursday morning, Matthias Warnig, the German CEO of the operating company of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline which connects Russia to Germany, had resigned from the supervisory board, after being targeted by American sanctions.

The United States announced Wednesday sanctions against the company "Nord Stream 2 AG" and its main leaders, including Mr. Warnig, who had been appointed in 2019 by Gazprom to represent the company with Schalke.

Aged 66, Mr. Warnig began his career in the circles of power in the communist GDR.

According to the German media, he was a senior official of the Stasi (the East German Ministry of Internal Security, of sinister memory), in the espionage section.

After Moscow recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed pro-Russian "republics" in eastern Ukraine, Germany on Tuesday suspended the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

The gas pipeline, at the heart of geopolitical and economic battles since its conception and whose construction has been completed since last fall, was not yet in service.
