The toll continues to rise.

Floods and landslides that devastated the Brazilian city of Petropolis after torrential rains killed at least 176 people, including 29 children, according to civil defense.

As rescuers search the mud and ruins of buildings, 112 people are still missing, a police source said.

Less than a week after the disaster, 143 of the 176 bodies found have been identified.

The search continued Monday, for the sixth day in a row, even if the authorities acknowledged that the chances of finding survivors were very slim.

#StormEunice is likely to be one of the first extreme weather events we see this year.

The world is still largely in denial that we are changing the climate and this is just the beginning.

torrents of mud

The streets of the city of 300,000, which Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has described as "a theater of war", have been turned into torrents of mud and landslides have washed away dozens of houses built on the hillside .

Pope Francis sent his condolences on Sunday after his Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.

"I express my closeness to those affected in recent days by natural disasters," he said, citing "devastated" Petropolis and Madagascar, recently hit by deadly cyclones.

“Lord, receive the dead in peace, comfort their family members and support those who offer help,” he added.

In addition, new storms have killed at least two people, said the emergency services of the state of Espirito Santo, which borders the state of Rio de Janeiro, where Petropolis is located.

One person was crushed to death by a collapsing wall in the town of Alegre and another was washed away while trying to recover a car in the town of Nova Venecia, authorities said.

Climate change in question

Over the past three months, more than 200 people have died in torrential rains, mainly in the states of Sao Paulo and Bahia, as well as in Petropolis.

According to scientists, these extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change.

The municipality of Petropolis has already found more than 300 vehicles washed away by the waters, "scattered across the city, blocking the streets and sidewalks or thrown into the waterways", said the mayor's office.

In addition, more than 1,200 people were forced to evacuate their homes.

The tragedy caused by the violent storms of February 16 is the deadliest in the history of this tourist city, the former summer residence of the imperial court of Brazil in the 19th century, located 60 km north of Rio de Janeiro.

The toll exceeds that of the torrential rains which killed 171 people in February 1988.
