The arrests continue, as a new demonstration against the ruling military junta is scheduled for Monday.

According to the organizers, around forty activists were arrested on Thursday during a rally in Khartoum.

According to a committee of lawyers, this brings to nearly 200 the number of protesters detained in Suba prison in Khartoum.

Meanwhile, the number two of the ruling junta, General Hemeti, engaged in a communication operation on Thursday, claiming not to be aware that these demonstrators were in prison, before announcing that he would release them.

This is a disinformation campaign, said Samier Ali Makeen, a member of the emergency lawyers' committee which helps detainees.

“

I don't believe him, he's a liar.

How can he not know that there are protesters in prison

?

The security forces who brutalize these demonstrators and arrest them are his men.

They are under his command and take their orders directly from Hemeti.

Samier Ali Makeen believes that the general seeks by this announcement to calm the game against the Westerners.

“

I think the reason he announced he was going to release imprisoned protesters is because he is under pressure from the international community.

We ourselves have filed numerous complaints with the Attorney General.

We have also seized a United Nations human rights delegation here in Khartoum to alert them and remind them of their duty to ensure that human rights are respected in the country.

Maybe they intervened with the Sudanese authorities to free these people.
