On December 29, 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma a draft basic law “On Citizenship of the Russian Federation”.

It is planned that the Ministry of Internal Affairs will be responsible for making decisions on the admission of certain categories of persons to citizenship.

“The term for consideration of their applications for admission to Russian citizenship has been reduced from one year to three months,” the ministry’s press center quotes TASS.

It is noted that certain categories include citizens who are not subject to the so-called simplified procedure for admission to Russian citizenship, who have received political asylum on Russian territory, are recognized as refugees and are serving under a contract in the Russian army.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that in 2021 more than 735 thousand foreigners received Russian citizenship.
