The world's super rich has increased the value of their fortunes enormously during the pandemic, shows a new report from the aid organization Oxfam.

The explanation includes stock rises and massive financial support packages.

- Inequality has exploded during the pandemic.

For the billionaires, this has been a period of unprecedented boom, says Oxfam's general secretary Abby Maxman in SVT's Agenda.

According to the organization's latest inequality report, released on Monday, the ten richest men in the world have benefited from covid-19 and doubled their fortunes.

At the same time, 160 million more people have fallen into poverty.

- It is a real setback after the successful fight against poverty in recent years, says Abby Maxman.

Oxfam, which fights poverty, advocates a global wealth tax.

The organization wants a one-time tax aimed at the rich where the money will go to vaccines.

Many have gotten better in Sweden

A similar development can also be seen in Sweden during the pandemic.

Those who are poor have become somewhat poorer, while middle-income earners' finances have increased somewhat, according to economist Daniel Waldenström at the Institute for Business Research.

- This means that we have actually had a fairly favorable situation for many.

It has been possible to reduce its costs but still have an unchanged income, says economist Daniel Waldenström, who has researched what causes economic inequality, and continues:

- If we go to the rich group.

They have clearly gotten better.

Capital has flowed to the stock market, which has benefited the rich groups.

In addition, the large support packages during the pandemic have fueled the situation.

The wealth of Swedish billionaires has increased

So what about Sweden's ten richest billionaires?

With the help of the business magazine Forbes, Agenda has calculated how much their fortunes have increased during the pandemic, from March 2019 to now.

The full list can be seen in the fact box below.

The industrial owner Carl Bennet has increased his fortune the most in percentage terms.

He has almost managed to triple the value according to Forbes.

– Företag som tillhandahåller medicinteknik i en pandemi kommer att kunna dra det längsta strået och det är det vi ser i Carl Bennetts fall, säger Daniel Waldenström.
