Andersson (S) will hold talks with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö on Thursday, and on Friday with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, according to a statement sent to TT.

The topic is the tense situation between Russia and Ukraine, since Russia has gathered tens of thousands - according to some observers around 100,000 - soldiers at the border, as well as Russia's demands that more countries should not be allowed to join NATO.

"The European security system is non-negotiable.

In Sweden, it is we ourselves who decide on our foreign and security policy and who we choose to cooperate with, ”says Andersson in the statement.

"Must be respected"

"In the light of developments in and around Ukraine and the deteriorating security situation in our immediate area, I have just spoken to Finnish President Niinistö and will hold talks with NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg.

The government is also in dialogue with the US administration. "

"International law must be respected and complied with.

This includes each state's right to make its own security policy choices independently, "the statement continues.

Linde in the United States

On Thursday, Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) landed in Washington to discuss with Russia the actions of Russia in and around Ukraine.

For three days, Linde will have a series of meetings in the American capital.

At the top of the agenda are talks with Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and President Joe Biden's Deputy National Security Adviser Jonathan Finer.

- The most important thing about this trip is the conversations before all the dialogues that will be next week, Ann Linde told TT shortly after arriving in Washington.

Several meetings

From Monday, representatives from Russia will meet in three different meetings with representatives from the United States, NATO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Representatives of the United States and Russia will first meet in Geneva, Switzerland, on 10 January.

It is still unclear who represents the countries.

Russia-NATO meetings will then be held on 12 January, followed by Russia and the OSCE on 13 January.

Those meetings are completely focused on the tensions around Ukraine.
