In the early morning (Wednesday) in the dark night of Hobart, on the island of Tasmania, the crew of Black Jack, owned by the Australian Peter Harburg and led by the skipper Mark Bradford, celebrated their victory, after a duel bitter against his Australian rival on the River Derwent.

Black Jack crossed the finish line after two days, 12 hours 37 minutes and 17 seconds.

Christian Beck's LawConnect maxi arrived almost three hours later (2 days, 15 hours 11 min and 44 seconds).

For Peter Harburg, it is the first victory in the race after several attempts.

However, this year he chose not to be on the boat.

Black Jack won the Sydney-Hobart for the second time, twelve years after having already gleaned it under the name of Alfa Romeo, in 2009.

This 76th edition was marked by difficult sailing conditions, which led to several retirements among the teams involved.

Of the 88 yachts that left Sydney on Sunday, only 52 remained on Tuesday.

Many competitors had to retire after sustaining damage and minor injuries to their crew.

The legendary 628-mile (1,200 km) sailing race was canceled last year due to the health crisis, a first since 1945.

In addition to the difficult conditions, several boats have been forced to give up this year due to cases of Covid-19, including the favorites Comanche and Wild Oats XI.

Four also retired just before the start and 17 doubles boats were allowed to participate, a first.

In total, 88 yachts took the start on Sunday, compared to 157 registered in 2019.
