• Wednesday evening, three buildings in downtown Bordeaux were evacuated after an alert from the trustee of one of the buildings.

  • Eleven people were evacuated, of which three were relocated by the CCAS.

  • Experts will visit the site to assess the condition of the building and the risk of collapse.

The building located at 8 rue Jean Burguet in the center of Bordeaux is still standing.

This building and the two neighboring buildings were evacuated Wednesday evening pending the opinion of experts on the stability of the building, after an alert from the trustee.

The situation is reminiscent of the collapse of two buildings in rue de la Rousselle at the end of June, but Amine Smihi, security assistant at the town hall of Bordeaux, warns that there is not necessarily a link to make, to this stage.

Eleven people evacuated

The trustee of the building located at number 8 warned the city of the existence of a hole in the cellar, with a significant flow of water "in an area clearly under construction and supported", specifies Amine Smihi. A security protocol was triggered, resulting in the evacuation of the eleven people present in the buildings concerned, with the help of the firefighters. They were sheltered in a room at Saint André hospital, located across the street. Three of them were then rehoused by the communal social action center (CCAS) while the others relocated on their own. The preventive transfer of some of the patients from the Saint-André hospital located just in front of the building was also carried out, even if the street is very wide and the risk seems low.

Almost all the occupants of the buildings concerned were present: the town hall was able to contact almost all the residents, in particular two traders.

All requests from residents must be addressed to the Saint-Augustin district town hall, specifies the deputy mayor.

The street was closed as well as the impasse Caillabet at the back "to secure all the buildings in the vicinity", underlines the assistant to the security.

Provisional endangerment orders have been issued by the mayor and they will be updated according to the conclusions of the experts.

These architectural specialists will be on site this Thursday to assess the stability of the building and the risk of collapse.

Once the water was cut off from the network, the flow stopped, which is reassuring according to experts.

Not a building under surveillance

After the rue de la Rousselle collapses, the city launched preventive diagnostics throughout the old city in order to place certain buildings under surveillance.

This was not one of the buildings identified.

It must be said that a priori nothing is visible from the outside since the problem is located in the foundations.

"The information around Rousselle has caused concern among residents and we have many more reports than before: this is normal", analyzes Amine Smihi.

At the request of the town hall, the notarial chambers and the trustees have also raised their level of vigilance on the condition of buildings.
