Eight groups and fifteen titles have just joined Google News Showcase.

However, their articles are already in the "news" tab.

Google News Showcase is a new service, a new experience according to the marketing term, which will really highlight the content of each title, without necessarily doing keyword research.

Putting high added value items

On the panel of “Dublin Live”, a news site in the capital, there are for example three main titles: this morning, two news items and the interview with an Irish TV star. If you click on the cartridge, Google offers the latest articles published as well as a highlighting of a news item, with a little context in three points. The user will even be able to access items that are normally paid for,

via

this service.

The main titles read in Ireland!

The Irish Times

,

the Irish Independent

- the two major print dailies, the

Daily Mirror,

more tabloid, "The Journal", one of the main online titles and a myriad of regional titles across the country are therefore participating in this. offers fairly general and broad in its potential audience.

Google pays newspaper publishers money to use their content, as a sort of "license".

In return, press groups must respect a confidentiality clause.

Obviously, the amount of the license was not disclosed;

it would be a payment "

of 5 to 7 figures

" according to the head of news of Google.

Monthly?

Annual?

For their part, the press companies explain that it is more about visibility and exposure and that they do “

not do it for the money

 ”.

Irish media are paid

For the user, it is financially free, but to access the normally paid articles, those which are protected by a "paid wall" and which will therefore be accessible with the News Showcase, you must create an account. say give an

, contact details. This data is valuable for newspapers as well as for Google. And newspapers and websites are betting on the possibility of converting these visits into real subscriptions.

Google, on the other hand, is gaining clicks, for starters.

And above all, it is a way, a little roundabout to free itself from neighboring rights, a European legislation which demands from the digital giants to remunerate press companies if they use, even an extract of their articles.

What Google refused to do until then.

He was even sentenced in France for it

.

The News Showcase is therefore a way of imposing its own general conditions, by remunerating some 200 publishers around the world.

In France, the service is not yet launched.
