A couple of weeks ago, Ida-Lo, who was then 6 months old, contracted the RS virus, a cold virus that can be dangerous for babies.

She stopped eating, coughed and stopped breathing.

Then the parents decided to go to the children's ward.

- They checked the oxygenation immediately when we entered.

Then they saw that she needed oxygen to get help to oxygenate, says Josefine Bergström.

Already many cases of RS virus

In normal cases, the RS virus usually circulates in the winter, but this is not the case this year.

The reason is that many children now encounter the virus for the first time after the pandemic.

During the period week 21 to 39, over 2000 cases of RS virus have been diagnosed in the country, according to the Swedish Public Health Agency.

Of these, there are 71 cases in Kronoberg County and 41 in Kalmar County.

Preschool children infect younger siblings

Josefine believes that Ida-Lo has been infected by her older brother who goes to preschool, and the great spread of infection takes place between siblings, according to pediatrician Malin Ryd Rinder at Astrid Lindgren's hospital.

She therefore thinks that clearer advice is needed.

- Do not meet lots of other people, absolutely do not send cold children to preschool and as far as possible also keep preschool children at home if you have an infant at home, she says.

Josefine thinks that this is good advice given by the pediatrician and she believes that if they had known how dangerous RS virus can be for young children, they would have been more careful.

- Unfortunately, it is probably the case that people think that it does not affect us.

I am now very grateful that it went so well.

Ida-Lo only needed to stay in hospital for two days.

It is nice that she has recovered so quickly and become alert again, says Josefine Bergström.
