In the Red Plain area that extends east of Jerusalem, the largest economic and recreational settlement city occupies an area of 100,000 square meters, its lands have been confiscated during the past years, from residents of the Jerusalemite town of Silwan, to serve thousands of settlers.

The economic settlement city, which is adjacent to “Ma’ale Adumim”, the largest settlement on the lands of the Holy City of Jerusalem, was inaugurated by the occupation, last September, to mimic the Italian city of Venice in terms of design and the magnitude of construction. The economic settlement city, which bears the name “Venice of the East”, receives thousands of pioneers. It includes a daily collection of Jews and settlers, as well as tourist delegations, as it contains large numbers of various economic centers.

settler temptation

Fakhri Abu Diab, the researcher in the affairs of the city of Jerusalem, responsible for the defense committee for the residents of Silwan, says: “The occupation seized Jerusalem lands several years ago, with an area of 100,000 square meters, which belongs to the private owners of the town’s residents. Silwan of Jerusalem, and the occupation claimed that it annexed these areas for military purposes, and they were registered as state land.”

In his interview with Emirates Today, Abu Diab explains that the management of the settlement complex is affiliated with the Israeli Ministry of Housing and a group of institutions specialized in settlement affairs, in addition to financial support from Jewish investors around the world, as the project cost amounted to 730 million shekels (832 million and 252 thousand dirhams).

According to Abu Diab, the economic settlement city includes commercial and entertainment centers, water canals, parking lots, restaurants and hotels designed in a modern Western style. The researcher in Jerusalem affairs says: “The settlement city was designed in a way similar to some European cities, including the Italian city of Venice, where It includes water paths, shops, and restaurants, as if you are sitting in Europe, and some of them resemble the city of Las Vegas, in order to entice settlers in the occupied areas, to move and reside in the areas of Jerusalem and the West Bank.”

It seems that the goal of establishing the settlement complex is to control more of the lands of the neighboring Palestinians, and to bring more settlers, to reside in the settlements near the complex, and to create job opportunities for thousands of them inside, and according to Abu Diab, 70,000 settlers live near the economic settlement city, among them 50,000 settlers reside in Ma'ale Adumim, and the rest are in other settlements in the Holy City of Jerusalem.

geo-isolation

Abu Diab added: “Over its appearance, the settlement city (Venice of the East) appears to be a recreational and economic complex, but the goal of its establishment is in fact a strategic military, to suffocate the Palestinians and confiscate more of their lands.” Between the Palestinian communities in the city of Al-Quds Al-Sharif, and the cities of the West Bank from the eastern side. Abu Diab continues: “The new settlement project east of Jerusalem creates a new reality for the Palestinian residents who live in its location, as a result of its strategic location next to the settlement (Ma’ale Adumim), which makes it impossible for Palestinians to move between the south and north of the West Bank.” The holy city indicated that the economic settlement city opens the door to more settlements, in East Jerusalem and within the cities of the West Bank.”
