According to the Swedish Maritime Administration, it was an elderly couple who were out fishing for lobster when the woman fell overboard.

- The man lost contact with her, so she was probably under the surface for a while.

Then he got hold of her, says Mathias Hansson, rescue leader at the Swedish Maritime Administration's sea and air rescue center.

Another boat that passed by came and helped and the rescue service was alerted.

- We received the alarm at 11:53 and at 12:07 we received information that they had a person up in the boat, says Mikael Bergström, assistant rescue leader.

Was taken to hospital by helicopter

Shortly afterwards, a helicopter also landed on the nearby island of Kullen and took the woman to hospital.

According to Sahlgrenska University Hospital, the woman is seriously injured.

- She is life-threateningly injured, says Calle Jershed at Sahlgrenska's press office.
