Several airlines have decided to leave their planes on the ground after the volcano began to spew out thick clouds of black ash after the new eruption.

The volcano, located in the natural area of Cumbre Vieja, had its first eruption in many years this Sunday.

Since then, about 6,000 of the island's about 80,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes.

It is the first time since the outbreak started that air travel has been canceled.

It is still unclear when the airlines can resume their flights.
