A 23-year-old Moroccan national was sentenced by the court in Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) on Thursday, September 23.

He was checked on July 14 on board a truck returning from Spain with nearly 130 kg of cannabis found inside, reports

Most of the drugs were packaged in pallet boxes stored below the trailer.

Nine kilos were also discovered in the armrests and a mini-fridge, details the local daily.

That day, the respondent was accompanied by an accomplice who managed to escape during customs control in Biriatou.

Three years in prison

At the hearing, the respondent assured that he was not aware of the goods transported.

"I cry because I am here unfairly" he said on several occasions.

His lawyer for his part argued a "customs error", quotes the newspaper.

The defendant was nonetheless sentenced to three years in prison with continued detention.

He also received a ban from French territory for a period of ten years as well as a customs fine of 250,000 euros, the estimated value of the goods.
