France ends the limit of one carton of cigarettes when returning from a European Union country. European regulations set personal consumption at 800 cigarettes (4 cartridges), 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars and 1 kg of smoking tobacco.
The decree thus strengthens the criteria allowing customs officers to assess whether the person transporting cigarettes purchased them ‘for their own needs’ The new rules come into force on March 29, 2024, according to the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Public Expenditure, which is responsible for the regulation.
