Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi arrived this morning, Sunday, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in the first visit by an Egyptian president to Iraq in 30 years.

Al-Sisi's visit to Iraq comes within the framework of a summit between Egypt, Jordan and Iraq, aimed at strengthening security, economic, trade and investment cooperation between the three Arab countries.

According to the official Iraqi News Agency, Iraqi President Barham Salih received his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at Baghdad International Airport.

While a statement by the Egyptian presidency explained that Sisi's visit comes to participate in the tripartite summit between Egypt, Iraq and Jordan, with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and Jordan's King Abdullah II.

The statement described Sisi's visit to Baghdad as historic, as it is the first visit by an Egyptian president to Iraq in 30 years, and it confirms Egypt's keenness to support and develop relations towards broader horizons.

The expected summit is the fourth, as the first was held in Cairo in March 2019, and the three countries formed a joint council in light of its results, while the second summit was held in the United States in September 2019, and the third in Amman in August 2020.

The three countries have concluded joint and bilateral economic agreements with each other, mostly centered on energy, trade and investment.

It is noteworthy that the Egyptian-Iraqi relations stopped following the invasion of the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein of Kuwait in 1990, but the relations of the two countries have witnessed a steady improvement in recent years, as many senior officials of the two countries exchanged visits.
