When the examinations at Mid Sweden University were moved home during the corona pandemic, cheating also increased.

These are 65 cases last year, and so far this year 55. The vast majority are dropped, so far about 20 cases have been processed this year and led to suspension.

- We predicted that there would be an increase but did not think it would be this significant, says Arne Wahlström, General Counsel at Mid Sweden University.

The hall exams with guards have been changed into home exams to reduce the spread of infection.

This has made it easier to cheat and now the inspections show that more cases are reported to the university's disciplinary committee.

Sharp increase

These are mainly two types of cheating: plagiarism and illicit cooperation.

- A typical corona cheat can be that you google for answers and copy and cut in, says Arne Wahlström.

Important for credibility

What is allowed and not regulated in the 10th chapter of the Higher Education Ordinance.

You must be able to feel confident that the student has the knowledge that the grades claim, says the General Counsel.

- In the disciplinary committee, we handle that you try to twist a performance that someone else has done.

We have high evidentiary requirements much like a court, but we can also take into account if you show a will to improve.
