Damascus is the first in the world among the least liveable cities

European cities are becoming less livable during the coronavirus crisis, according to data from the 2021 Global Quality of Life Index published by The Economist on Wednesday.

Vienna, which was ranked the world's best city to live in between 2018 and 2020, fell to 12th place, while Hamburg dropped 34 places to 47th.

Eight of the cities that fell in the ranking are European cities.

The Syrian capital, Damascus, is still ranked first among the least liveable cities in the world.

The city of Auckland in New Zealand climbed to first place, as it succeeded in containing the Corona virus pandemic, which kept public life open and scored high scores in areas such as education, culture and the environment, the Economist indicated.

Auckland was followed by Osaka in Japan, Adelaide in Australia, Tokyo in Japan and Wellington in New Zealand.

Honolulu, Hawaii, increased its ranking by 46 places, as it rose to 14th place after improvements in the vaccination campaign and successful containment of the epidemic.

In general, the Corona pandemic has deteriorated the quality of life globally as cities have suffered from closures and severe pressure on health sectors.

The average quality of life decreased by seven percentage points compared to what it was before the pandemic.
