About 93 million Mexicans are called to the polls for mega-elections in which more than 20,000 mandates are to be renewed across the country: all 500 federal deputies, half of the 31 state governors and almost 2,500 mayors and municipal councils.
These are the biggest elections ever held in the country.
The most violent too.
Because the campaign, since its inception, has been marked by several assassinations of candidates.
And the number of assaults recorded is a record.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, known as “Amlo”, nevertheless called on the population not to be intimidated and to vote without fear.
Security arrangements have been reinforced in some polling places, especially in the capital, to prevent fraud.
These midterm elections will determine the future of the Amlo government.
Even if the presidential party Morena is the favorite in the polls for the legislative elections, the challenge will be to retain its absolute majority in the Assembly.
