• Maïcol Goncalves-Furtado had refused a police check while he was on a motorcycle with a passenger during the curfew.

  • After the publication of the IGPN report in the

    JDD

, his relatives demanded “the opening of a judicial investigation” by the Nice prosecutor's office and “a trial”.

  • Maïcol's mother would like to have answers to understand what happened that evening.

For four months, marches and protests have followed one another in Nice to demand "Justice for Maïcol". This 20-year-old young man, who grew up in the Liserons district, died on January 10 in a motorcycle accident in the Liautaud tunnel, after a chase with police officers from the BAC (anti-crime brigade). He was carrying a friend who came out with superficial wounds. The two Nice people wanted to escape control when they were out during the curfew.

"Today, we know that he was taken care of at 10 pm and that his death was announced at 10:40 pm", indicates Feïza Ben Mohamed, instigator of a march and close to the family.

She was able to take note of this information thanks to the report of the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN), published Sunday in the

JDD

.

"It had been sent to lawyers a fortnight ago," continues the activist from Nice.

This investigation makes it possible to learn more about the circumstances of this accident, which is important for the family, and it calls into question the role of the police in the death of Maïcol ”.

"Nothing justifies what happened"

Following the reading of the report, Feïza Ben Mohamed demands that a judicial investigation be opened by the Nice prosecutor's office. “A memo from the departmental public security directorate of the Alpes-Maritimes, which dates from 2020, recalls the conditions under which there can be the initiation of a chase,” she continues. That evening, nothing justified an arrest of such a scale, with peaks at 150 km / h in the city. Especially if it was for the curfew violation. Even if he didn't have his motorcycle license, even if he had consumed cannabis, is that an excuse to take such risks and take the life of a man? "

It is then attached to the conclusions of the IGPN and remains hopeful for the continuation of the case.

"We will go so far as to appeal if ever we do not have our answers," said the anti-racism activist directly.

"It won't make me my son"

Answers is also what Nogueira, Maïcol's mother, is asking for. “All I want is justice. I know that will not make me my son but at least we can pay tribute to him and we can start to mourn ”. At her side, Absa, 21, who created the "Justice for Maïcol" group and who is very close to the family, continues: "She was relieved to see the IGPN report and a trial could allow her to understand. all the story. Above all, we want this kind of event to never happen again. This is also why we mobilize on social networks and talk about it. Even after four months, we do not forget and we will not let go. "

Feïza Ben Mohamed concludes: “The trial will give the impression that we hear pain.

If someone is responsible, they have to pay.

But it's important to know what went through the minds of the police that night ”.

As for the police officers, Nicolas Vincent of the Alliance Police 06 union recalls his “unconditional moral and professional support” to his colleagues.

“They too, like any citizen, have the right to the presumption of innocence.

An investigation is underway so we will let justice be done and we will wait for the conclusions.

We are not going to do the trial before the trial if there is a trial.

But in no case will this IGPN report dissociate us from our colleagues ”.

The Nice prosecutor's office has granted the family lawyer until June 9 to send him his observations on the IGPN report.

Following this period, he will decide the closing of the case, the continuation of the preliminary investigation or the opening of a judicial investigation.
