With the state program "Strong lion - the educational kick", Hessen wants to support schoolchildren in catching up on missed learning material in the corona pandemic.

Corona has left negative traces in the education system and is still leaving them, said Minister of Education Alexander Lorz (CDU) on Tuesday in Wiesbaden.

The state program relies on remedial courses, individual learning support in class and homework support, among other things.

Online tutoring, learning camps, cultural education, sports courses as well as socio-educational and psychological support are also to be offered.

According to Lorz, the country is providing 60 million euros from the Corona special fund for the current year.

Hesse also has an eye on the funding program planned by the federal government, which is still being voted on and should later be dovetailed with the state program.

New extracurricular partners

For “Löwenstark - der Bildungskick”, Hessen has brought proven and new extracurricular partners on board, said the minister.

These include foundations, sports and cultural organizations and voluntary projects.

"Whether tutoring in maths, reading promotion or application training, music, theater visits, a long day at the museum, swimming lessons or exercise in the schoolyard - the needs of our pupils are as varied as our support offers should be," explained Lorz.

Coaching offers for teachers

This also applies to school administrators and teachers, who are to receive additional opportunities for personal support, further training, special advice and coaching in the coming months. The managing director of the Landesvereinigung Kulturelle Bildung Hessen, Susanne Hilf, explained: "Children and young people need artistic and cultural offers right now in order to reflect on the challenges of the last year, to express their individual points of view and to experience self-efficacy again."

The Corona crisis increased deficits in reading, for example, explained the general manager of the Reading Foundation, Jörg Maas. “It doesn't work without reading. Whether at school, at work or in our free time: Reading is the basis for us to master and shape our everyday life. ”The foundation offers reading sets for young families and a first-time reading book for all Hessian school starters, among other things. The catch-up program came at exactly the right time - while discussions are still going on in other countries, said Maas.
