In a forest area outside Kall, Erik Alexandersson and his brother are felling.

Here, their relatives have farmed the land since the middle of the 19th century.

- It's time to harvest and plant something new, says Erik Alexandersson.

But the question is whether this will be the last time.

In the forest investigation that is now complete, there is a proposal that almost all forests along the entire mountain range should receive formal protection.

It is about 525,000 hectares.

This is forest that is today owned by the state, by large forest companies, but also by over 7,000 private forest owners.

If the proposal passes, they will lose the right to use their land.

The inquiry points out that they can then, as a suggestion, be bought out or offered land elsewhere.

- They confiscate the land that we own and use, says Erik Alexandersson.

In the video above, Erik Alexandersson talks about the feelings before the proposal, and what it would mean.

Local politicians critical of coercion

The forest investigation is part of the January agreement from 2019. Eventually it will land with the government, but it is already receiving criticism.

In a consultation response, the Social Democrats in Jämtland County, among others, point out how important forestry is for employment.

- This is an industry that we need, says Anna-Caren Sätherberg (S), Member of Parliament and chair of the Social Democrats' party district.

They are critical of the fact that forests close to the mountains must be protected regardless of the landowners' wishes.

- Volunteering as a basis, the inquiry talks about when forests should be set aside and protected.

But when it comes to the forest near the mountains, people still talk about a kind of compulsion, says Sätherberg.

The proposal: Develop nature tourism

In the forest investigation, it is proposed that the countryside can change and instead invest in, for example, nature tourism.

But that does not give Anna-Caren Sätherberg much for it.

- We already have a well-developed tourism but we must have several legs to stand on.

We must also have forestry.
