Halle (dpa / sa) - Five people were injured in a fire in an apartment building in Halle-Neustadt.
As a spokeswoman for the police announced on Friday, smoke was noticed in the stairwell of the building in Gellertstrasse on Thursday afternoon and the police were alerted.
According to the police, the cause of the smoke was burning rubbish in the basement.
The fire was quickly extinguished after the fire brigade arrived.
Four men (18, 23, 26 and 53 years old) and a 30-year-old woman were medically examined on site on suspicion of smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire was initially unknown.
The apartments in the house are still habitable.
Only one bicycle was damaged by the fire.
