Forchtenberg (dpa / lsw) - May 9th marks the 100th birthday of the resistance fighter Sophie Scholl.

On this occasion, the new Sophie Scholl postage stamp and the first day cover were issued on Thursday in Scholl's native town of Forchtenberg (Hohenlohekreis).

According to the city, the first day covers, stamped with “Weißer Rose” and “Forchtenberg”, were presented in Sophie Scholl's birthplace, today's town hall of the city.

The name Sophie Scholl stands like no other for the resistance against National Socialism.

Scholl belonged to the circle of like-minded people around Alexander Schmorell and her brother Hans.

As the White Rose, they denounced the atrocities of the Nazis and distributed leaflets to shake people up.

On February 18, 1943, Hans and Sophie Scholl were arrested during an action in Munich and executed four days later.

On Thursday, Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) presented the stamp in Berlin and opened an exhibition on Scholl's life at the Holocaust memorial, as announced by the International Auschwitz Committee.

Scholl's hometown of Forchtenberg and the Hohenlohe district have organized several events in honor of the resistance fighter despite adverse circumstances due to the corona pandemic.

This includes readings, church services, lectures and tours in the footsteps of the famous Forchtenberger.

An official birthday event on the Internet is planned for Sunday (May 9th).

As a participant, the city also names Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), who is supposed to speak a greeting.
