Turin (dpa) - Former Tour de France fourth Emanuel Buchmann feels “ready” for the Giro d'Italia, which starts on Saturday, and goes into the three-week tour with great expectations.

«The goal is the podium.

The competition is strong and therefore it will be difficult to achieve this goal, but I think it is possible, ”said the professional cyclist of the German press agency.

Buchmann took fourth place on the tour in 2019.

Last year he went to the Tour of France after a serious fall and did not get above 38th overall.

He has not yet given up his goal of being on the podium at the Tour.

But this year it doesn't make much sense.

“When I saw the track for the first time, I was very disappointed.

The tour is my favorite race, it is and will be that way.

But after the decision to go Giro was made, my whole focus was only on this goal, ”said Buchmann.

Due to the difficult profile, the Giro suits the 28-year-old.

In summer, the driver from the Bora-hansgrohe team wants to go to the Olympic Games.

“The route in Tokyo suits me, and the Olympics are definitely a goal.

But first comes the Giro, ”says Buchmann.

"Only then do I start thinking about what is still on the program for 2021."
