Bornholm (dpa) - A second ship has started laying pipes for the controversial Baltic Sea gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.

After successful tests, the Russian pipeline-laying vessel «Akademik Tscherski» started laying work in Danish waters, Nord Stream 2 AG announced on Tuesday.

The Russian "Fortuna" has been laying pipes in Danish waters since the beginning of February.

The double line, which is supposed to transport 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year from Russia to Germany, has largely been completed.

The company Nord Stream 2 referred to information from the end of March, according to which 95 percent had already been laid.

Spread across both lines, a total of around 93 kilometers were missing in Danish and around 28 kilometers in German waters.

The «Akademik Tscherski» had left the port of Wismar at the beginning of March, where it had been rebuilt.

She then carried out tests near Kaliningrad and set out for Danish waters at the end of March for further preparations.

A Swiss company withdrew its special ships at the end of 2019 after threats of sanctions from the USA.

After that the laying work was paused for about a year.

At the end of 2020, the “Fortuna” initially laid a section in German waters.

The US wants to stop the pipeline with sanctions.

They fear that Europe is too dependent on Russian gas.

Proponents of the pipeline counter the Americans by saying that they are only looking for better sales opportunities for their liquefied gas in Europe.
