• The Montpellier start-up Uchronic offers IGP Pays d'Oc wines from producers in Hérault and Gard, in 250 ml aluminum cans.

  • Three whites (chardonnay, viognier and pinot noir), three reds (syrah, merlot and sauvignon), and a rosé (grenache) make up this exclusively organic range.

Canned wine? For several years, daring entrepreneurs have been breaking wine codes, and offering to drink a cannon in these small boxes, in which we are more used to whistling a soda or a beer. This is the case with Uchronic: this Montpellier start-up has recently been packaging IGP Pays d'Oc, Hérault and Gard wines in 250 ml aluminum cans.

Their little extra?

All the beverages on offer, whose ultra-colorful packaging has been particularly neat, are organic.

And single-varietal, no blending of different varieties at Uchronic.

“We wanted to rediscover the taste of the grape varieties, as they are found in our region,” says Benjamin Furlan, the founder of Uchronic.

Three whites (chardonnay, viognier and pinot noir), three reds (syrah, merlot and sauvignon), and a rosé (grenache) make up the range.

To put in the fridge, or not, according to taste.

Calibrated for take-out

For these first cans, sold between 5 and 6 euros, the company worked with producers from Hérault and Gard. As for the recipes, they have been developed in close collaboration with oenologists. But not only. “The final choice”, notes Benjamin Furlan, it is a panel of young consumers, aged 25 to 35, who had it.

These cans, first imagined to accompany take-out meals, have already been adopted by around thirty restaurants in Montpellier.

“I regularly ordered take-out and delivery meals, and I couldn't find the experience of wine by the glass from restaurant tables,” says Benjamin Furlan, founder of Uchronic.

The only possibility at home was to open a bottle of wine… and finish it or keep it.

I wanted this idea of simple wine by the glass in restaurants to be found in take-out and delivery menus, confides Benjamin Furlan.

The current crisis has propelled this type of restoration, and we wanted to support this trend.

I think many restaurants will keep these offers.

"We recommend drinking it in a glass"

Selling wine in a can is particularly cheeky.

However, the young company did not completely break with traditions.

“We recommend drinking wine from a glass, and not necessarily from a can,” continues the founder of Uchronic.

In the same way as wine, it is not drunk directly from the bottle.

Or that we rather consume a good beer in a glass.

But seasoned consumers have tried the can, and they found it very enjoyable!

Our wine file

As it is aluminum, and not metal, “there is not the smell of coins that one could have known, as a child, while drinking a soda, continues Benjamin Furlan.

And the wine is particularly well preserved, away from light or oxygen.

The can is quite simply a mini-tank, like the stainless steel tanks found in cellars.

The young company, which is capitalizing on the concept, is currently working on the export of these small cans of Occitan wines to the four corners of Europe.
