Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has signed the new Infection Protection Act with the "Federal Emergency Brake".

The Office of the Federal President announced on Thursday.

The law now only needs to be published in the Federal Law Gazette to come into force.

The Federal Council had previously let the law pass despite massive criticism.

In a special session, the regional chamber decided not to call the mediation committee on the law that the Bundestag had passed the day before.

There was no formal vote.

In the Federal Council, all six Prime Ministers who spoke up in the debate expressed considerable displeasure.

However, due to the ongoing corona pandemic, they recognized the need for action and therefore did not want to stop the law.

The "emergency brake" should be pulled if the number of reported new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a district or a city is over 100 within seven days for three days in a row. Then people are usually no longer allowed to leave their own apartment after 10:00 p.m. Walking and jogging alone is allowed until midnight. A maximum of one household can meet with one other person, with the exception of children up to 14 years of age. Shops are only allowed to open to customers who present a negative corona test and have booked an appointment. Classroom teaching in schools should usually be stopped at an incidence of 165.
