Sondershausen (dpa) - Construction work on the steep face of the Kyffhäuser monument has been temporarily suspended because of a breeding pair of eagle owls.

The district office of the Kyffhäuserkreis announced on Monday that this applies to the immediate area of the nesting site for the rare birds.

A solution is being sought together with the Ministry of the Environment.

The nest was discovered last week by the construction company at the point below the monument that is to be renovated.

Eagle owls are strictly protected.

So far it was planned to complete the 3.2 million euro renovation of the steep face below the monument in summer.

Work on the protection of the rare birds could now be delayed somewhat.

The monument on the border between Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt takes up the legend of Emperor Barbarossa, who, according to legend, sleeps in the Kyffhäuser Mountains.

The 81 meter high structure (1890 - 1896) shows an equestrian statue of Emperor Wilhelm I and a sleeping Barbarossa figure.
