08 April 2021 It had been expected for a decade.

Now it is written in black and white and has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies.

We are talking about Spain's first climate change law.

The local media reported it.

Objectives

The text provides that the Iberian country will eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The law was passed by the Commission for Ecological Transition: an urgent parliamentary procedure, no discussion in plenary session was necessary.

The passage to the Senate and votes in favor

Now the rule will go to the Senate. Final approval, according to the Spanish press, could come between April and May. Almost all the political forces that support the government of Pedro Sánchez, formed by the Socialist Party and Unidas Podemos, plus Ciudadanos, voted in favor of law 8212. The Popular Party abstained, while Vox, on the far right, voted against.

Who asked for stringent regulations

Several groups, explains Spanish public television, have nevertheless asked for more ambitious goals than those envisaged by the law, including the one that establishes for 2030 a reduction of harmful emissions by 23% compared to 1990 levels.
