Hamburg / Norderstedt (dpa / lno) - According to the ADAC, helpers in traffic accidents should first think about their own safety.

"As a first aider, self-protection must always come first," said ADAC Hansa spokesman Christian Hieff on Tuesday.

The first minutes after an accident are always very critical, as there is a risk that other drivers will not recognize the scene of the accident immediately and will not come to a stop in time.

"There is then a risk of a chain reaction in which the subsequent accidents have more disastrous effects than the actual triggering of the collision."

On Monday evening such a situation arose on a slippery road on the A7 near Norderstedt (Segeberg district).

An 18 year old driver was driving too fast in bad weather.

According to the police, he lost control of his car at the Holmmoor rest stop and crashed into the central barrier.

A 64 year old man trying to help was hit by another car and killed.

The 26-year-old driver of the second accident car and three passengers, including a baby, were seriously injured.

According to the ADAC, self-protection includes, among other things, stopping at a safe distance from the scene of the accident on the far right-hand edge of the lane and switching on the hazard warning lights.

Passengers should get off on the side facing away from traffic.

To set up the warning triangle, you should approach the traffic behind the guardrail and warn other drivers with hand signals.
