Hanover (dpa / lni) - In Lower Saxony's football, projects against anti-Semitism will soon start in the stands and in the background of the game.

The Minister of Justice Barbara Havliza (CDU) announced on Wednesday in Hanover that professional clubs, amateur clubs and popular sports are to be involved.

The basis for this is a set of guidelines developed by the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation and the World Jewish Congress.

As the state commissioner against anti-Semitism and for the protection of Jewish life, Franz Rainer Enste, emphasized when presenting the guidelines, the aim is to make prevention against anti-Semitism in football a permanent task.

It is important to take into account the fan culture, but also the many coaches who have to do with young people in popular sport.

The guidelines were created as part of the federal program “Live Democracy!”

and sponsored by the World Jewish Congress.

To prepare the guidelines, scientist Raimund Lazar from the Bergen-Belsen Memorial conducted around 30 interviews with those involved in football in Lower Saxony last year.

It is important that the clubs put the issue on the agenda and acknowledge their commitment to anti-Semitism, he said.

Education and training offers are particularly helpful with regard to volunteers in amateur and popular sports who have their hands full with the organization of the game.

So far, there are no statistics on anti-Semitism in the area of football in Lower Saxony, said Lazar.

As a preventive measure, he also advocated encounters with Jewish and Israeli football clubs as well as dealing with the local history of one's own club.

Were there Jewish players and members there in the past, what happened during the time of National Socialism and afterwards, these are questions that some clubs have already dealt with.

For specific projects, it is now a matter of cooperating with fan groups and achieving that popular clubs and players position themselves.
