Wiesbaden (dpa) - an egg every day - almost: a chicken in Germany lays 301 eggs on average per year.

And almost 40 percent of German eggs in 2020 came from companies in Lower Saxony (5.1 billion pieces).

This is what the Federal Statistical Office has calculated just in time for this year's Easter.

North Rhine-Westphalia (1.4 billion) and Bavaria (1.1 billion) followed as egg producers.

According to statistics from Tuesday, the 42.9 million laying hens in Germany totaled 12.9 billion eggs.

Because the per capita consumption in this country is currently 239 eggs, 5.9 billion fresh eggs had to be imported from abroad - three quarters from the Netherlands.
