Dresden (dpa / sn) - Unknown people in Dresden cheated an 80-year-old man out of 78,000 euros.

A woman pretended to be the husband's daughter on the phone on Monday and claimed she caused a fatal traffic accident, the police said on Tuesday.

Then an alleged public prosecutor took over the conversation and asked the man to pay 48,000 euros so that his daughter could be released from custody.

The man handed the requested amount to a supposed messenger.

Shortly thereafter, the fraudsters increased their claim by a further 30,000 euros, which the pensioner also handed over to a messenger.

Only when he had already handed over the money did the man call his daughter and find out that he had been betrayed.
