Oberstdorf (dpa) - The nocturnal view of the beloved Allgäu Alps and an award ceremony with his Franziska: Karl Geiger experienced picturesque moments of happiness at the World Cup in his home town of Oberstdorf.

His silver coup and the overwhelming overall situation on the normal hill known to him for decades made the 28-year-old Vice World Champion shine.

«I am extremely proud of my place.

Hats off to the organization, brilliant.

What has been taken on, you have to get it done first », said Geiger, whose wife is involved as a helper in the championships.

Like two years ago in Seefeld, the man from Oberstdorf has now won silver at the World Championships in the first ski jumping individual in his living room.

After jumps on 103.5 and 102 meters, Geiger only had to admit defeat to Poland's Piotr Zyla.

"Germany can look forward to a silver medal in ski jumping," said national coach Stefan Horngacher about the success with which his top athlete redeemed the German Ski Association (DSV) after eight medalless decisions at the start of the World Cup.

Geiger's winter is wildly up and down. At the beginning of December he took a break from the World Cup because his wife was heavily pregnant.

Then he returned before he was born and won gold at the World Cup.

It followed in this order: the birth of daughter Luisa, a corona infection and immediately after the isolation his first victory in a jumping competition, also in his home town of Oberstdorf.

But silver in the place where he was allowed to carry the Kazakh flag as a child in 2005 made him particularly proud.

"That is very difficult to name, but a World Cup at home, there will be exactly once in my sporting career," said Geiger and indirectly raised the home World Cup medal again to a higher level than the already huge successes in the current season.

That Geiger would be back at point X was not to be expected at all.

At the beginning of February in Klingenthal, the flight world champion was still in a low performance.

"If the World Cup had been three weeks ago, I would have gotten on my nose as much as in the World Cup," he admitted.

Now he was back, the "Karl out of the box", as national coach Horngacher called his protégé after World Cup gold in Planica in December.

Actually, teammate and buddy Markus Eisenbichler had been traded higher in the individual.

But the duo, who always share the double room in normal times, always celebrate together when one of the two gets through.

“It's important that one of us makes it.

Somebody packed it and that's awesome, "said Eisei.

He immediately interrupted his interviews at the end of the competition in order to rush to his smiling Schanzen friend in the run on the Schattenberg.
