Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) proposes that German forest owners be rewarded for their contribution to the environment.

The forests make a significant contribution to climate and nature protection, ensure clean drinking water, noise protection and relaxation, said Backhaus on Thursday when presenting a study on the so-called ecosystem services of the forest.

These services should be rewarded.

In the study, the Institute for the Sustainable Development of Natural Areas on Earth (Duene) in Greifswald calculates that every hectare of forest provides around 450 euros in ecosystem services every year.

But only 217 euros can be redeemed by selling wood.

The study was commissioned by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Forestry Agency.

Climate change requires higher investments in the forests and at the same time the price of wood has fallen, said Backhaus.

Therefore, the services for society should be rewarded by society.

Backhaus announced that he would like to carry his proposal into the conference of the environment and agriculture ministers.

A Federal Council proposal is therefore also being considered.
