American Medicines Agency: Johnson & Johnson vaccine is effective against Corona

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed in new documents published today, Wednesday, that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires only one dose, is highly effective against Corona virus (Covid-19), including against the British and South African mutated versions.

In large-scale clinical trials, the vaccine has shown efficacy against severe cases of 85.9% in the United States, 81.7% in South Africa and 87.6% in Brazil.

An independent committee will meet at the agency to discuss the benefits of the vaccine on Friday, and an urgent license for its use is likely to be issued shortly.

This will lead to the introduction of a third vaccine in the battle against the outbreak of Covid-19 in the United States, the most affected country in the world with more than half a million deaths.

Experts see the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as a vital tool, although it is less effective against mild cases of Covid-19 than that shown by the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines that obtained a license.

"The vaccine was effective in preventing Covid-19 using a less restrictive definition of the virus and for the most serious cases, including Covid-19 cases that require medical intervention, taking into account all cases that begin 14 days after vaccination," the agency's new summary states. .

"Although less effectiveness was recorded in general in South Africa, where there was a dominance of the B.1.3.5 strain during the time period of this study, the effectiveness of the vaccine against dangerous Covid-19 cases was high in all parts of the United States, South Africa and Brazil," he added.

Among the benefits of this logistically important vaccine is that it is given in a single dose and can be stored in regular refrigerators, which facilitates distribution.
