Neuss (dpa) - A foul-smelling, ten-kilo package with garlic puree triggered a hazardous substance deployment by the fire department on Friday at a parcel service in Neuss.

Two worried employees had dialed the emergency number 112 after they had noticed the smell described as "gas-like and very intense" while unloading a truck, the fire department said.

Four firefighting trains and a dangerous goods train arrived.

Parcel service employees were interviewed.

Hazardous substance measuring devices were used.

Firefighters wearing respirators unloaded the entire truck.

Finally, the source of the stench was found: a damaged package with the garlic.

It was not known who had ordered the ten kilos of puree and why.
