Isamu Akasaki and Shuji Nakamura, winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics, who contributed to the development and practical application of LED / light emitting diodes at the announcement of the Queen Elizabeth Prize in Engineering, which recognizes researchers who have benefited the world through technological innovation San et al. Were selected.

Founded in 2013, the Queen Elizabeth Engineering Award selects winners once every two years.

On the 2nd, the fifth 2021 winners were announced online, and Tenured Professor Isamu Akasaki of Meijo University and Shuji Nakamura, Professor of the University of California, were selected along with three other American researchers.

Five people have succeeded in developing and commercializing LEDs and light-emitting diodes, and as a result, lighting that lights brightly with low power consumption has come to be used in a wide range of fields, and it is evaluated that it has contributed to global warming countermeasures.

In response to the announcement of the winners, Mr. Nakamura commented, "Everyone knows the name of Queen Elizabeth. It is a very prestigious and important award in my life."

Mr. Akasaki and Mr. Nakamura won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014 for their successful development of blue LEDs together with Professor Hiroshi Amano of Nagoya University.
