Rastatt (dpa / lsw) - Forest workers have discovered an unusual animal in the Rastatt district.

A golden jackal could be seen on the images of a wildlife camera installed in the Rastatt city forest, as a spokesman for the local district office announced on Thursday.

It is a sensational find.

Golden jackals have never been native to Central and Northern Europe.

The core distribution area in Europe is the Balkans.

Evidence of golden jackals has therefore so far only been few in Baden-Württemberg.

Most recently, according to the spokesman, a male animal was run over near Bruchsal in December 2020.

A golden jackal is slightly larger than a fox, but significantly smaller than a wolf, to which it is related.

According to the Federal Species Protection Ordinance, it is particularly protected and does not belong to the hunted species.

The golden jackal does not pose a threat to humans. It prefers easy-to-capture food.

Mostly small to medium-sized mammals are on his menu.

It also feeds on amphibians, insects and fish.

Depending on the season, he also eats plant-based food.

Whether the golden jackal from the Rastatt city forest is a male or a female animal cannot be seen in the picture of the photo trap.

Climate change may be the reason why these animals can now also be found in our latitudes.
