Vogelbach / Pfalz (dpa) - Horst Eckel, the last living soccer world champion from 1954, was released from the rehabilitation clinic at the end of December after a serious fall.

"He is doing well so far," said his daughter Dagmar on Tuesday the German press agency.

"He has lost three or four kilograms, but is in the process of building up again and wants to start training next week."

The 88-year-old fell badly on December 22nd at home in Vogelbach, Palatinate, where he lives with his wife Hannelore.

Eckel suffered broken ribs, a concussion and a broken nose and jaw, among other things.

A "personal trainer" comes once or twice a week and builds Eckel, reported daughter Dagmar.

"Dad needs the incentive in competition."

The long-time professional of 1. FC Kaiserslautern is one of the “heroes of Bern” who defeated the Hungarians 3-2 in the legendary 1954 World Cup final.

Eckel was the first German champion with Kaiserslautern at the age of 19, and already world champion at 22 - as the youngest in captain Fritz Walter's team.

For Germany he played 32 international matches.

After his career he became a teacher.

Eckel will be 89 years old on February 8th.
