Salem (dpa / lsw) - Around 200 Barbary macaques are currently wintering in the outdoor enclosure on the Affenberg in Salem on Lake Constance.

Thanks to a thick winter coat, the animals would have no problems with the snow, explained park director Roland Hilgartner.

"The little ones are happy about it."

Extensive cuddling is currently the order of the day.

This way the animals would keep warm in the cold season.

In addition, it is the mating season that goes from autumn to winter.

The first monkey babies can be expected again in spring.

"Last year there were twelve baby animals."

How many there will be this time is difficult to predict.

Barbary macaques are native to Morocco and Algeria.

There they live in mountain regions up to heights of 2000 meters.

The climatic conditions are very similar to those on Lake Constance, so that the animals can live outdoors all year round, said Hilgartner.

In their homeland, the survival of the apes is partly threatened.
