In the spring of 2018, the raid was carried out, which resulted in hundreds of animals being taken into care - among them were several endangered animal species, with which it is completely forbidden to trade.

Many of the animals were killed, others could be relocated to zoos.

Among other things, two dwarf crocodiles, five Egyptian cobras and 53 leatherback turtles were found.

The animals were owned by a man in his 40s who is suspected of having run an illegal pet store with animals that are forbidden to trade with.

Had business plan in computer

The prosecutor believes that the trade has been going on for seven years.

Among the evidence are advertisements and chats about sales and barter as well as a business plan that the man had in a computer.

Another man is charged with involvement in some of the crimes.

This includes animal cruelty as some of the animals lived too crowded and had too little water or food.

The County Administrative Board has previously said that they also found poisonous snakes that were not locked in their terrariums.

Suspected of smuggling in 1,300 geckos

The other man is also suspected of having helped smuggle animals.

According to the prosecutor, he flew to Morocco to smuggle in around 1,300 wild-caught live helmet geckos to Sweden.

The accused men deny any wrongdoing.

The man who is suspected of running the trade has previously told SVT Nyheter Skåne that he had as a hobby to breed and sell lizards, kungsboa, kungspyton and dabbagam, and that all animals were sold with valid documents - except in one case.

The man's defense lawyer tells SVT Nyheter Skåne that he has not had time to take part in the prosecution, but that his client still denies the crime.
